If you’re planning a trip to the Land of Smiles, particularly from Phuket or Krabi, Phi Phi should definitely be on your radar. It boasts some of the clearest waters, whitest beaches, and most stunning limestone cliffs you’ll ever set eyes on.

While many people head there, especially drawn by the fame of Maya Bay, sometimes you hear complaints about the crowds. But trust me, with a little planning, you can absolutely make the most of this incredible destination.

Having explored Southeast Asia quite a bit, I’ve found that timing and strategy are key.

When’s the Best Time to Visit Phi Phi Island?

Phi Phi Island has a classic tropical monsoon climate – hot and humid, with two main seasons.

Dry Season: October to April

November to April is generally considered the best time to visit Phi Phi Island. During these months:

  • Waters are clear and calm
  • Minimal rainfall
  • Sunny days, perfect for activities

Temperatures range from 23–30°C, especially pleasant between November and February.

Note: This is also peak season, with more tourists and higher prices, especially during December and January holidays.

Rainy Season: May to October

The southwest monsoon brings rain and rougher seas, particularly from June to October.

  • May can still have sunny days
  • Rain typically falls in the afternoon or evening
  • Snorkeling and diving still possible, especially in sheltered areas
  • Maya Bay is closed for restoration in August–September

Pros: Fewer tourists, lower prices, and a more peaceful atmosphere. Just be ready for potential rain and limited boat access.

Wonderful Things to Do in Koh Phi Phi

Once you’re there, Phi Phi is packed with incredible experiences. The main island is Koh Phi Phi Don, where you’ll stay. Famous sites like Maya Bay are on Koh Phi Phi Leh.

  • Take a boat tour: Visit Maya Bay, Bamboo Island, Tonsai Village, Monkey Beach, Mosquito Island, Viking Caves, and Pileh Lagoon (my personal fave!).
  • Snorkeling and Diving: Try Shark Point, Bida Nok/Nai, and Bamboo Island reefs. Best during dry season, but still good in low season.
  • Swimming and Kayaking: Explore Loh Dalum Beach by kayak or swim in the emerald waters of Pileh Lagoon.
  • Hike to Phi Phi Viewpoint: Don’t miss this! Three viewpoints offer epic photos. Bring water, sunscreen, and small cash for entrance.
  • Relax on the Beaches: Tonsai Bay, Loh Dalum Beach, Long Beach, Laem Tong Beach, and the secluded Loh Moo Dee.
  • Experience the Nightlife: Reggae Bar, Slinky Beach Bar, and fire shows at Loh Dalum Bay offer plenty of entertainment after sunset.
  • Unique Experiences: Consider a bioluminescent plankton tour or a peaceful sunset cruise.

Getting To and Around Phi Phi

Access Phi Phi via ferry or speedboat from Phuket, Krabi, or nearby islands. You can also do a one-day boat trip.

On the island: There are no cars. Get around by walking or using longtail boats for longer distances.

How Long Should You Stay?

While a day trip from Phuket is doable, I highly recommend spending at least 2 nights to soak up the vibe, enjoy sunrise/sunset moments, and explore at a relaxed pace.

Dealing with the Crowds

Phi Phi can get crowded, especially December–January. Here’s how to manage:

  • Go early: Especially for Maya Bay. Arrive before 9 AM.
  • Stay overnight: Day-trippers leave in the afternoon, giving you quieter evenings and mornings.
  • Travel during shoulder season: Late October–mid November or April has good weather and fewer people.
  • Book private tours: Longtail boats offer flexibility and less crowding.
  • Choose quieter stays: Stay at Long Beach or the northeast side of Phi Phi Don for peace.
  • Avoid Tonsai Village at peak times: It gets hectic around midday and dinner.

Be a responsible traveler: Choose eco-friendly options and avoid contributing to overtourism.
